Coaching Success

We had a great coaching session on the terrain last week.  Thanks to Charles, our regional coach, for leading the session, and to Paul and Gavin for coming along to assist him.

The session started with a refresher of the basics, how to hold and throw the boule, and how to stand and position feet, which was a useful reminder that if you get the first things right, everything else follows much more naturally. This was followed by a session covering pointing, and finished with shooting practice.

By the end of the evening we were all pretty exhausted, but buzzing from such a stimulating and useful evening. Let’s hope the confidence that everyone felt after all this practice translates into some amazing pointing and shooting at our Club sessions!

Kirkstall Deli Market Demos

Next Saturday 27th April, Leeds Pétanque will be present at the Kirkstall Deli Market, which is typically held on the last weekend of every month, demonstrating the wonderful game of pétanque to members of the public and passers by.

Please speak to Chris if you are willing to support and lend a hand between 11am and 1pm. Please note that the market event is held over the road from the club terrain within grounds of the abbey itself.

Hope to see you there 🙂

Competition Season

Now that summer is officially here, competition season will soon be underway.

Leeds Pétanque participates in two main leagues during the summer months – the West Yorkshire League and the York League. The Leeds Club won the West Yorkshire Cup last year and have additionally won the York League for the last four years (so no pressure this year then!)

The West Yorkshire League covers Wetherby to Huddersfield – six clubs in total playing ten matches (five home, five away) during the daytime. Alan will be organising the club squad for the West Yorkshire League, so if you’re interested in taking the ‘next step’, meeting other players in the region, and taking on some different terrains in a fun and informal environment, please speak to Alan.

The York League covers a much larger area surrounding York and league games are played on Thursday evenings. If you’d like to throw your hat in the ring, please speak to Neill directly.

There are also numerous events organised by Yorkshire Pétanque throughout the year, click here for more information.

Coaching Sessions

In two weeks’ time (Tuesday 16th April) the club has arranged a coaching session with a qualified Yorkshire Regional Coach. Please note that this event is available to members of Leeds Pétanque Club only, and as places are limited you must book in advance if you wish to partake – please see Chris or email LeedsPetanqueClub@gmail.com to confirm your place.

The evening will cover 2 x 45 min sessions looking at basic and tactical skills… a good starting point for players who are new to the game, and a good refresher for the more experienced players following a number of rule changes in recent years.

If you are additionally a member of Yorkshire Pétanque there is no extra charge for this session, otherwise there is a nominal fee of just £5 payable in cash on the day.

If coaching isn’t for you, don’t worry… there will still be sufficient space on the terrain for a regular club session.

But why not dust off your boule and book your spot today?!

New Features

If you’ve yet not braved the recent cold weather to come up to the club for a while, it’s worth a look! We have recently installed two benches where spectators will be able to sit, relax, and watch games in the summer sunshine(?!), as well as an incredibly smart sign giving information about the club and a useful guide to the rules.

Over the coming weeks we will also be adding a layer of slightly larger gravel to the smaller terrain to provide a different playing surface, so be sure to check it out.

A huge thank you to Alan, Charles, and Paul, who collectively designed and fitted the sign and benches, and to Wades for the funding to make this all possible.

AGM Update

Following this week’s AGM, thank you and congratulations to the following members who have volunteered and been elected to the committee.

  • Chair – Paul
  • Secretary – Chris
  • Treasurer – Mike
  • Committee – Alan
  • Committee – Charles
  • Committee – Gavin
  • Committee – Jo
  • Committee – Neill
  • Committee – Pam

In addition, Gavin has kindly agreed to maintain the website, so if you have any content or photos please do get in touch with him directly.

In other news, the following key points from the meeting will also be of interest to members.

Melees – rather than continuing with the monthly melee, the club will instead focus on arranging a club day / social at some point in summer. The committee will organise this and set a date shortly so watch this space!

Club Sessions – in order to avoid extensive hanging around waiting for the last game to finish before enabling the remix of players, starting this Sunday, the last game playing will instead play just one further end after everyone else has finished to determine the result. This will speed up the remix of players and enable everyone to begin the next round sooner.

Equipment – access to equipment is limited due to the opening times, so it would be greatly appreciated if any members with spare boule could bring them to future sessions so that others can borrow them. We are currently looking at alternative storage options, but for now any spare sets will be helpful.

The full minutes have been circulated to members, so that’s it for now and see you soon 🙂

Annual General Meeting 2024

Next Tuesday 12th March at 6pm we will be holding our AGM at the Vesper Gate Pub. This is your opportunity to have your say on how the club is run, and perhaps even put yourself forward to join the committee.

Following the AGM there’s the option to join the pub quiz at 8pm.

Hope to see you there!

Subs are Due

It’s that time of year again and annual subscriptions are due.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could make prompt payment via bank transfer (please include your name followed by ‘membership’ as your payment reference), or alternatively please bring cash to a club session in an envelope with your name on.

If any of your details have changed, please let Chris know via email.

Happy bouling! 🙂

Dates for your Diary

Sunday 14th January, 11.00am – Melée with Huddersfield

We have invited Huddersfield Pétanque Club to come over and participate in a friendly melée. We will be mixing players of all abilities from both teams, and this is an opportunity to meet and play with some new people in the spirit of friendly competition. Depending on numbers there will be opportunities for doubles and triples matches. Retiring to the pub afterwards will be an optional additional feature. In order to get a sense of possible numbers, if you could let Paul know you are interested that would be helpful (in a non-contractually binding way!).

Sunday 21st January, 11.00am – Club Melée

Come and join other club members for an informal competition and the chance to claim the first trophy of 2024!
